The portrait is of Sebastian, the brother of a friend of the artist. In creating this work, Mikulka was influenced by nineteenth-century British painters of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, particularly in the choice of rich violet and green tones. He says: ‘I wanted the background forest scenery to express the personality of the sitter.’
